Internal Medicine Residency

A State-of-the-Art Hospital with Faculty and Resources Committed to Resident Education

The ACGME Internal Medicine Residency Program at Arrowhead Regional Medical Center began in June 2014 and offers a fully accredited 3-year training program in internal medicine. Arrowhead Regional Medical Center is an ideal location for training in Internal Medicine. The academic environment, the diverse patient population, the well-trained Internal Medicine attending physicians, and the exposure to a great variety of illnesses will help ensure the training of a well-rounded, highly skilled internist. The academic portion of the program entails morning case conferences, monthly journal clubs, board review sessions [ACP Board Review, MKSAP review, NEJM Board Review], lectures in a variety of internal medicine topics, and pre-clinic talks. As ARMC is a County hospital, the Internal Medicine residents are also supervised by Internal Medicine attending physicians who have both academic and clinic experiences. Bedside teaching, mini-lectures, and feedback are a routine part of daily rounds on in-patient rotations and continuity clinic. Finally, the variety of disease processes and management of severe illnesses will ensure that the trainee has a broad exposure to diverse illnesses and becomes a competent and caring internist.

Internal Medicine Curriculum

Arrowhead Regional Medical Center

ARMC is San Bernardino’s premier public hospital and is situated in Colton, California. Colton is located at the western edge of San Bernardino in the Inland Empire region of Southern California. We are served by 2 major L.A. County airports – Los Angeles International (LAX) and Ontario International (ONT), as well as John Wayne International (SNA) in Orange County. We are located at the nexus of the San Bernardino (I-10), Riverside/San Bernardino (215), Foothill (210), and Ontario-Devore (I-15) freeways.

The outwardly graceful design belies a structural integrity skeleton and architecture built to withstand a magnitude 8.3 level earthquake. Three helipads on the hospital grounds facilitate critical patient transport from all points in the county of San Bernardino. Local freeway exits, bus service, and extensive parking allow for easy patient, staff, and physician access.

ARMC is a state-of-the-art, acute care facility embracing advanced technology in all patient care and support areas. New technologies such as a Digital Imaging system – the Picture Archiving and Communication System (PACS), enable imaging access from any clinical area. Add a Hospital-wide networked computer system, full function onsite Medical Library, Tele-conferencing, and multi-disciplinary residency programs in Family Medicine, Emergency Medicine, General Surgery, Internal Medicine, Obstetrics & Gynecology, and Psychiatry; one can see unlimited potential for first class medical education. Combine the above with a challenging and wide-ranging caseload and you have the foundation for a rewarding career in postgraduate medical training.

ARMC offers the latest in patient care by providing a full range of inpatient and outpatient services, three off campus community health centers, Department of Behavioral Health’s inpatient activities, numerous specialty services, and the only burn center serving San Bernardino, Riverside, Inyo and Mono counties. Freeway access, shuttle service and locale as an Omnitrans bus hub makes ARMC convenient to county residents.

The hospital and behavioral health facilities are comprised of 456 (90 behavioral health and 366 hospital) inpatient rooms, most of which are private. ARMC has recently been designated as a stroke center. The Emergency Department is a Level II Trauma Center, One of the busiest ER’s in California serving the Nations’ largest County and consists of 45 observation rooms, 8 treatment rooms, 3 law enforcement holding rooms, and 8 trauma rooms - Annual ER volume >100,000. The helicopter landing area can accommodate both standard medi van helicopters and military helicopters. The outpatient care center consists of 109 examination rooms and 8 procedure rooms.

ARMC remains one of the most technologically advanced health care institutions in the entire country. It is also seismically sound, capable of withstanding an 8.3 magnitude earthquake, and is designed to remain self-sufficient and functional for a minimum 72 hours.
